If you're using LDAP, phpBB accounts no longer matter and most people disable registration. When someone logs on with their LDAP credentials, if there is no entry in phpBB's user table for it, it will create an entry for them and then log the user in. In most scenarios where we see an external user directory deployed, those environments don't want third party applications inserting users into their directory since they already manage that themselves. For that reason, phpBB only reads from the external directory and does not attempt to write to it.

BUT you need to start by making a user on the board with the exact same username as an account in LDAP. Make that user a founder so they have full permissions in the Admin Control Panel. Then you use that user to change the authentication type. My initial problem was it couldn't find my board username in AD.

This also answers the problem of how do you manage the transition between the two authentication methods.
